Volunteer Spotlight: Ken

Originally from Hertfordshire, I moved to Bath ten years ago with my wife. My career began as a Secondary School Teacher in Craft, Design and Technology and ended with helping to run a small IT company that developed learning systems for large organisations.

I’ve always loved finding out how things work, and that curiosity has led to plenty of DIY and building projects over the years.

Before moving to Bath, I spent about ten years as a Cub Scout Leader, which really instilled in me the importance of giving back to the community. Volunteering with Share and Repair lets me share the practical knowledge I’ve gathered and keep learning from others at the same time.

One thing that’s really stood out to me since joining is how supportive and generous my fellow repairers are — always ready to offer help, advice, and encouragement.

A highlight for me was helping to run a Power Tools Workshop. The group of ladies who attended later set up their own WhatsApp group called the “Power Tool Girls” — it’s so rewarding to see how much confidence and camaraderie grew from that session.

When I’m not repairing or building, you’ll probably find me behind a cocktail shaker — I’m a keen weekend mixologist! During lockdown, I used to leave a rather large Espresso Martini on the wall for my neighbour to enjoy. As for food, I couldn’t live without a good pork pie and a Dry Martini (though not at the same time!).
