Autumn Bath Half Marathon Training – Peter and Joe

Did you know that we’re running the Bath Half Marathon in Spring? We’ve got a great team of runners who are training for the big day!

We’ve got a mix of volunteers, staff and the public who will be running, and some are documenting their training adventures in a journal. If you are also braving the cold, wet mornings and dark nights to train, here’s some solidarity! Read on for a snippet of what Peter and Joe are up to:

Peter

Peter volunteers each month at our Repair Cafe in High Littleton, he’s an expert repairer.

“Last Sunday I ran the Bromham Pudding Run 10k in 44:26 which turns out to be my fastest 10k in 3 years! 😀

10k these days takes the same level of concentration and effort that a fast half marathon used to take for me only a few years ago, CFS/ME makes longer runs quite a challenge, so I run them with compulsory walk intervals.

Sometimes it’s 60s run / 60s walk, other times if I’m working on endurance I try and run as far as possible which is a maximum of half a mile, and then take a 3 minute walk break. That helps keep my recovery very time low which is the most challenging training aspect for me at the moment.

Currently I’m aiming to do around 50 miles running a month, which is usually two medium runs and a longer 10k ‘long run’ at the end of the week.

I’ve been challenged by a hamstring injury that just wouldn’t go away since mid September, and the sole aim of Sunday’s race was to NOT break my hamstring again – which it didn’t – a huge win. Yay!

I usually train at night, whatever the weather, I just get used to going out with a head torch in the lashing rain – if its training night, its training night! Probably the best bit of kit I’ve bought is a pair of (allegedly) waterproof socks. They keep my feet toasty and I don’t notice the cold rain soaking through my trainers. But note to self, they turn into sloshy water bags that you have to then carry on with for the rest of the session if running through a flood that breaches over the top 😉

I’m also supplementing my training with biking to work and walking on days off.”

Joe

Joe volunteers with us in the Share and Repair shop in Bath since recently graduating.

“My girlfriend and I try to run a couple times a week together (although this doesn’t always go to plan!) as she is conveniently also running the Bath Half. I’ve been enjoying the change of the seasons on my runs, especially the crisp air, colourful leaves and silhouettes in the twilight of the darker autumnal evenings.”
